This blog has been very quiet lately. Probably because we've all been super busy running and biking and aerobicizing and pushin-up-ing and generally being kick-ass and healthy human beings. Personally, I'd like to start running again, but motivation is hard without a goal. So how about this goal?
On November 1st, there will be a 5K race in Nacogdoches, benefiting CASA of Deep East Texas and winding through Pecan Park. You can read all about it on their website. I think it sounds great - good cause, nice excuse to run Lanana Creek Trail, perfect time of year, and far enough off to get back in shape. So what do you say, Nacogdoches peeps? Are you ready to rock another attempt at 5K-dom? I hope so, because running by myself is lonely!

Feeling Fit
As of late I have backed off from running a bit because I have been dreading it and I think I have gotten to where I am really bored with it. Every once in a while I'll bust out 1 or 2 miles and still feel pretty accomplished at the end. I don't want to lose being able to run at least 2 miles but I won't be focused too much on how fast I can do it and just that I can do it without stopping.
I have been hitting the weights again and really enjoying it. I have also been utilizing the fitness classes being led in the Recreation Center on campus. I'm starting to feel alive again during my workouts and a bit obsessed (not a bad thing as long as I don't over do it) with my activities. On my easier days I have been playing an hour game of racquetball. Well, I say I am playing racquetball but when you do not know the rules of the game it's just basically whacking the little blue ball as often as you can and keep it up.
I'm hoping that my little muscles will come back again. :)
Hope everyone is fit and happy.

Fl(ab) work
Yesterday and Friday I worked out with weights for upper and lower body. I also did ab work with Swiss exercise balls.
Today my abs are screaming. It's nice to know that I have some muscles there after all. :)

gimp along
I wish I had a video of me waking up this morning and getting out of bed. I hobbled all the way to the shower. Thank goodness for hot water on sore muscles. It's been a while since I've done step aerobics, y'all. :)

rain makes me sleepy
Yesterday was a tough day to muster up the energy to go to the gym. Around lunch time I grabbed my gym bag to change into my work out clothes. As I walked towards the restroom I did a complete u-turn to look out my work building's glass doors. Yeah...*sigh*...it was still raining.
So, in a split second I think to myself..."I'll just go after work instead." And then I go towards my office only to do another u-turn and think to myself... "just go to the damn gym!"
Once again I head towards the restroom and this time I successfully changed into my work out gear. I head back to my office to grab my SFA I.D.
AAAAAAARGH!!!
No I.D. *sigh*
I call K at home (he was feeling ill and took a sick day) and ask him to check my jean pockets that I wore on Saturday and he found my SFA I.D. and my driver's license. I go home for lunch so I can retrieve my I.D.s, eat lunch, kiss the hubby, and scratch all the animals behind their ears.
Back to work.
I finally did go to the gym after work. And once again it was so hard to make myself. I had a terrible headache all day and still have residual headache today. However, I still managed to walk/jog for 30 minutes. I ran one mile in 10 min and 26 sec. I then did resistance training for the upper body for 30 minutes.
I went home and found out that K was feeling too puny to walk the dogs so I went back outside with them and walked the dogs for 45 min. I was pretty tired afterwards but felt a lot better than I did before I had started to exercise.

zoom zoom
Sonnie's quickie mile inspired me to put the medal to the pedal (pedal to the medal? I have never understood that saying) and run at least two miles yesterday. I accomplished that goal, and I did it in 19 minutes and ten seconds! That is two miles under 10 minutes each! I felt pretty good the whole time, but just as I finished the second mile I got a bad stomach ache/cramp and had to stop. Oh, well. I hadn't run more than a mile and a half in a while, so I told myself that I'm easing back into things.
After running and cooling down, I hit the weight machines and worked out arms and legs for another 30 minutes. Also, I rode my bike to the gym and then the Kroger and walked my dog in the morning for about 40 minutes. Walking my dog counts as exercise because we walk fast and I'm usually a little out of breath. When Nathan is here, we amble and he usually drinks a beer, so I don't count that. When it's just me and Seamus? Zoom zoom zoom.
Hope everyone else is staying healthy and strong!

Saturday
I cannot remember what's the fastest I have ever run a mile in, but today I did it in 9 min and 37 sec. That's only because I was running behind my 15 year old long legged cousin. Today was the fastest she'd ever run her mile because I was behind her the whole time chasing her. Heh. How about that?
I'm too old to be chasing after 15 year olds on the track. *lol*
We ended our track time in the racquetball court and played for quite a while. It was a good work out day.

I have been doing...but not doing well...just doing...
Monday: walked the dogs...it's been so hot during my lunch hour when i go to visit the pooches but i still take them for a 30 minute walk.
Tuesday: met up with chrissy at the rec center...jogged one mile with success...the second mile didn't go down as i had hoped...overall, though, i was on the track for one hour and 30 minutes.
Wednesday: went to the rec center during my lunch hour and ran 2 slow miles...took me 25 minutes...but that's okay...nice and slow got me to where i was headed. weight lifted for my upper body for 25 minutes.
hubby had to work until 6-ish so i went home and walked the dogs for 35 minutes.
Thursday: went to the rec center during my lunch hour and did 50 min on the elliptical trainer.
**I feel good this week. Feeling a bit tired but I'm trying to get myself back into the game of doing and doing it well.

jog a thon
Today was the jog-a-thon at school. Working in kindergarten, I get to do everything twice ... one for a.m., and once again for p.m.
We were late for our morning jog by about 10 minutes. The kids kept stopping in the middle of the track, or someone would fall down and cry. I managed to do about 21 laps in 20 minutes. Before you think I'm a rock star, let me explain. The track is small. I actually have no idea how far I ran, but I did it again in the afternoon and managed 29 laps (whatever that means) in 30 minutes. None of the kids in the afternoon kindergarten ran as many laps as me. I did have a first grader beat me by 1 lap.
That was the first time that I have ran in over a week and I did fine (I think anyways, depending on the track size).
That's my update. I'm biking to school again if it is not raining out.

fatzillas/fitzillas
So it happened... I reached critical mass and developed a gravitational pull. I avoided all things physical and ate the caloric intake of a small eastern german village. The real kicker is I saw myself on video and was like "who is that fat guy" and thanks to those of you that saw me out and about and didn't say "hey jeff, you're fat"!
So to my point, Jeromy Barber and I will be starting a health regiment and will be blogging and posting video of our adventure. Not to spoil it but we have been to the Dr. and to a nutritionist and soon we will have a personal trainer... this is a full on lifestyle change and we would enjoy any input. I will keep you informed of the progress and where to find more info as we get it going. There will be a website, crazy goodies and the entertainment alone!!!
I hope you all are well.
btw I ran this morning 2 miles. painful.

In motion...
Herro!
Yes, I am still alive and keeping the body in motion.
Monday, I had gone home and walked the dogs for about 40 minutes. It was a good hard walk under the sun and my bully, Toby, had thrown in the towel at about 39 minutes and something seconds and started to drag me and Josie up the driveway back to the house. Hey, at least he knows where he lives.
Tuesday, I ran into Chrissy at the track where she hoofed it with me until it was time for her to leave. I then met up with Mary and we walked and jogged. Together, we did two miles of jogging and probably about two miles of walking.
In total I had walked and jogged for 1 hour30 minutes15 minutes.

run run run
Hello friends! I've been quiet the last few weeks, but I have been running. In fact, I'm up to running 3 miles on the regular. On Sunday, I ran 3.14 miles (pi!) in 31 minutes and 45 seconds, which is my record so far. Of course, I was sore all day yesterday, but it was worth it. I've also been doing little 25 minute long weight routines three mornings a week, and I think I'm starting to have a two-pack. (As opposed to a six-pack.) I'm feeling pretty healthy and fit these days, and that makes me happy.
Also, I'm getting a new bike in the next few weeks and I can't wait to start going on longer bike rides. I just read about Kealy's seven mile adventure and oh, how it made me long! Hope everyone else is feeling just as good.

...
On Friday I stayed on the elliptical for an hour. It looked like I had gotten caught in a rain storm after all was said and done. Ew.
Saturday, I hit the Rec Center and ran 3 miles. Knees were so mad.
Sunday, I played racquetball for an hour with a friend.
It is Sunday evening and I just devoured two pieces of "No Pudge" brownies. I think it was fully deserved.

Yesterday's workout was on the elliptical trainer. I did it for 50 minutes.
The end.
The end.
3 miles
Yesterday, Nathan and I went running at the gym. Well, we warmed up together and then we put on our iPod shuffles (or MyPod, as I like to call it) and ran our separate ways. He is a bit too fast for me to keep up with, but I'm cool with that. I ended up running just over 3 miles in... 32 minutes! That's two minutes faster than the 5K that Sonnie and I did in March. I was very excited. I had my eye on the clock the whole time and really booked the last three laps. Also, music is really helpful for keeping me motivated. I usually chat with the girls when I run, which is also nice, but it's good to know that I have alternatives for those times when I'm running alone.
As for Nathan, he did five miles in 37.5 minutes. Bastard. :)

...
Yesterday evening, I had left work and went straight to the rec center. It was a rare day when I didn't have to drop K off at home first before hitting the gym.
I weight trained for 45 minutes.
I jogged for about 12-13 minutes for a one mile distance around the track.
I walked the track for about 55 minutes.
My knees have been feeling funky this week and hopefully if I take it a bit easy they'll recover quickly.
My arms and abs feel sore and tight today from the weight training.

just a movin'
This was a good workout weekend.
Saturday I met up with Chrissy and Mary and we ran 3.1 miles at the rec center. It was nice to have finally run that full distance again, since it was my first time to do so after my 5K.
I felt great afterwards and was surprised that I didn't have too many aches and pains in the evening.
I walked the dogs in the early evening and it was a nice leisurely stroll for about 30 minutes.
Sunday I met up with Franzi and we played racquetball for about an hour and ten minutes.
Today my knees are feeling a bit abused but overall I feel relaxed and body accomplished.

red faced, mussed hair, and sweating
I went to the track today around 11:30 a.m. By the time I walked two miles it was 12:05 and that's when I started to run.
Oh my...it is friggin' hot out there!
I only ran 1.5 miles but overall I was out on the track for 4 miles.
As I was running the hot wind blew my hair over my face and at times I was grateful for the shield from the sun. Every once in a while I was graced by a cool breeze that would come out of nowhere and would chase me for about five seconds. It was just enough to tease me and make me wonder why the hell I was out there cooking my brain as I pounded the concrete course.
As I sit in my chair now while cooling down the feeling of lucidness washes over me as it usually does after a good workout.
I might of had a crappy run but the overall feeling I got from working out is well worth it.

two miles
Before you read this, go to the entry right before and read the comments for Kealy's covert update on her 5K-dom. Yay Kealy! I know I'm not the only one that is super impressed and so very proud of you!
As for my update, I've been sticking with my three-runs-a-week promise with success. And, even more exciting, I am consistently running two miles every time. Last night, I met Sonnie at the gym and we did two miles in 22 minutes, I think. Last Sunday, Mary and I ran just over two miles in 30. The time before that I ran alone, at the SFA outdoor track - two miles, but I didn't time myself. This is very exciting. I'm not sure what my next goal is. Probably to run three miles each time, and then do another 5K and get a faster time. Maybe try a 10K at some point... who knows? Right now I'm just trying to keep my distances consistent and my running sessions regular. So far, so good!
How about everyone else?

Sneakers!
I realized recently that my sneakers don't fit me. They're too small. This is probably because of that time I washed then and then put them in the dryer. Or maybe my feet are growing. At any rate, my feet hurt after a run and most notably in the toe region. I even got a blister after my run on Sunday! Plus my shoes are old. Like, three years old. So I'm going to Lufkin this weekend to get new ones. Any suggestions for brands or shoes or colors?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Question
I ran outside on Sunday and did great. No pain ... no problem. I went last night to run again, but it was cold and raining so I went to the good ol' treadmill. That's when the pain set in. Shin splints. Ouch.
I was planning on running Monday, Wednesday and Friday (my run is on Sunday) and just doing some other cardio and/or yoga like normal on the other days, but I thought I was going to die! I finished my mile and switched to other machines for the remaining time. I think that I'm not going to run for the rest of the week. I know I'll be fine once I'm out there, but I did have one question ...
What kind of pain relief is alright take while running? I know that I can use some tiger balm, but is advil (or something else) safe to take before the run?

back on track (again!)
Hello friends! My goal last week was to run three times. I ran on Tuesday, but I was just starting to come down with a nasty cold and not being able to breathe kind of puts a damper on your ability to run. Thursday I was supposed to run with Mary, but I ended up staying home from work because I was sick. Sinus pressure and sneezing and headaches. Boo. I was feeling better by the weekend, and the weather was beautiful on Sunday, so I decided to go to the outside track on campus and see what I could do. I ended up running two miles, and it was so hard! My legs were pretty sore afterwards, but I was glad I pushed myself.
This week I'm still a little congested, but otherwise I'm fine. I have a good feeling about this week. Hope everyone is having a lovely Monday!

I think I can. I think I can.
What a beautiful weekend. The sun never went away. I had friends in from out of town on Friday, so I just ran to the gym real quick and did a couple miles on the elliptical. My dad showed up on Saturday morning and I talked everyone into going on a hike with me. I ended up getting a sunburn on my arms and face. It was beautiful outside and I couldn't have been happier to see the sun again.
My dad stayed with me until this morning (after buying me some much needed groceries). He wanted to go on another hike with me, but I told him no. My race is coming up and I have to get serious about training. If I had gone on that hike this morning, I would have not been up to running later. I'm in good shape, but I have hardly done any running outside.
This afternoon I took off. I walked / ran for about a mile to warm up and then took off for a nice steady jog. I made it all the way home (almost 2 miles according to map my run) without stopping and it only took me 24 minutes. Those endorphins kicked in and I felt like I could have kept going forever, but I promised Pfunk I'd be back.
As long as it isn't freezing outside, I know that I'll be ready for my race. I just registered. How exciting!

Hello, Remember Me?
Yes, I'm still hanging in. I have kind of disappeared from the blog scene for awhile and have been exceptionally lazy about recording my progress, but mostly, Sonnie or Chrissy mentions when they meet with me at the rec center and I haven't done a whole heck of a lot outside of that.
Typically, I go on Sundays with Matt and this past Sunday I ran two miles (not consecutive) and walked about three. I like Chrissy's idea of keeping track of all the miles here and there for the week, but if I think about it too much, the fact that I am not keeping track will stress me out and I already have enough lists. Blorg.
I am also rather bummed that I have yet to run a 5K or really, even 3.1 miles straight except in those early days when I was having uncanny beginner's luck. I am heartened though by Chrissy's reminder that we got in this to make running and fitness a regular part of our lives, not just to run a 5k one time.
I would still very much like to run a full 5k. I know Sonnie, Chrissy, and Michelle have run one--what about everyone else?
It's good to be back online; I'll try to stay up to date from now on.

Brrrrr
It is still too cold outside.
Pfunk's middle school has a kick ass track and it didn't hurt my legs at all to run, but the temperature dropped to about 40 something. I ran a mile. I never warmed up. Texas has ruined me for cold weather.
I'll just wait until that promised 70 degrees comes my way.

Sad - A - Thon
We are having a jog-a-thon in May and so the other EA and I decided to get the kids ready. She has been a runner off and on her whole life, so we thought it would be fun for the kids and us to run off some energy outside. It was a pretty sad scene. I thought for sure that the five-year-olds would show me up, but over half of them couldn't even run one freakin' lap! I was amazed. They were also amazed by me.
Wow! Miss. K! You can run? I've never seen a teacher run!
I ran with the kids who could run and we managed to run 3 laps before it was time to go in. I say we require television viewing to be treadmill powered for anyone under the age of 18.
The weather is changing. It should be mid 70s and sunny this weekend. I'm ready! It is overcast right now and I'm heading out for a few laps at the middle school to train.
Anyone up for donating money for each lap I complete?

elliptical trainer - 45 minutes
**Reading a large book while pumping my legs as fast as they can go on the elliptical trainer is also a good core workout. It takes balance to make sure I don't embarrass myself and fall off of the elliptical as I turn pages.

under the weather
My goal to run three times this week is off to an okay start. Last night I met Sonnie and Mary at the gym, and we walked and jogged for about 50 minutes. I'm all stuffed up and I immediately got a really bad side stitch - when you can't breathe, it's kind of hard to take in enough oxygen. Oh well. Even if I'm not exactly kicking ass and taking names, at least I'm keeping up with my routine and making running a regular habit.
I commented on Kealy's last post and mentioned that I needed to get remotivated. I did a 5K, but my ultimate goal isn't running 3.1 miles once. It's to make running a part of my life, and to keep doing it for my health. I played around with map my run and found out that my bike ride to work is almost exactly one mile long. Then I started adding up how many miles a day I ride - usually about four (to work, home for lunch, back to work, home for the day) and sometimes more (if I ride to yoga). Then I thought, it would be fun to keep track of the miles I bike each week. I like lists, and I like the idea of competing with myself. So of course that led to me thinking I should keep track of miles run each week, which might motivate me to eek out another mile here and there. If you think about it that way, all those little miles add up to something pretty impressive.
I'm going to try it out and I'll let y'all know how it goes. Sometimes I think I spend more time motivating myself and making lists than actually accomplishing anything. C'est la vie.

hi
I have been going to the gym.
After spring broke, I tried to switch over to evenings. Last week was a horrible week as far as running goes. I went with the intention of running twice. I ran both times, but I was sloppy and slow. I know what the problem is. I tried to skip my period. I started on the pill and was told that I could skip a couple of months. Well ... the force is strong in me and my legs, back, and other pre symptoms came screaming through. Once I realized what the problem was, I gave it a rest. I continued the week on the elliptical and included a little weights.
I also realized that evenings don't work for me. Pfunk decided that she doesn't want to be my partner anymore. I have been replaced by soccer (I got dissed). Plus, I have to fight for a machine in the evenings and I'm just too tired by the time I can get there.
This morning I dragged myself out of bed and was able to run about 2 miles (almost running the whole time). I do not feel ready to run a 5K today, but I might once I get out there. In-between the hail and the rain I may not have time to prepare outside before the big day.
That's all I have to report as of today.

Hey gang!
So last week I was all set to run three times, and I was going to run FAR and FAST. Unfortunately, I got as far as Tuesday, and that was it. One run. In seven days. What happened?
Nathan's parents came to visit, which required some last minute changing of schedules, which is fine. Then I accidentally got drunk on Saturday and spent all of Sunday in bed. I could barely walk, let alone attempt a 5K. It seems that something always comes up, and I can't remember the last time I actually ran three times in one week. I thought once I was home and not traveling I'd be better, more regular about exercising. How wrong I was!
So this week I make the same promise to myself - three runs, or else! Anyone have any advice for staying on track? Is it better to get it done first thing in the morning? Early in the week? Should I shut up and just do it and stop my whining? Be harsh. I can take it.

Sunday Funday
I met up with a friend at the Rec Center and played racquetball for an hour. I'm always amazed at the type of work out I get from the game. It's pretty intense on my lower body. When you sprint, suddenly halt/pivot, and stay in a crouched position it makes me realize that there are some muscles that remain untouched until racquetball.
I hope everyone had a great weekend and finish it out on a good note.

thirsty
Just got back from my run today and boy is it hot and humid outside. Did I really wish for Summer??
I ran the 5K route on campus that Chrissy and I ran last Saturday. I didn't fare so well on the route today. I had to stop a couple of times and walk because my legs kept tightening up and trying to cramp on me. Hrm. It could be from just having a bad running day but I'm thinking it's because I'm not hydrated enough. I haven't been very good about keeping up with my water as I'm doing all this running. I know because last night I couldn't stop drinking water. I was so thirsty and couldn't quench my thirst.
I'm going to have to force myself to do better on drinking water.
But regardless if I stopped a couple of times I still got the run under my belt for today.
Happy running!

Whoo-hoo!
Sonnie and I ran a 5K! And we didn't die! Whoo-hoo!
We ran at a medium pace and didn't come in dead last (though close to it). Sonnie finished in 33 minutes and 59 seconds, and I was right behind her at 34. It was pretty laid back, and the route wasn't too confusing (we were afraid we'd be so far behind that we'd get lost and have to give up half way through) and there were a few puppies running with their owners, which was fun. My knee bothered me when we were coming down on some of the hills and I had to keep reminding myself to breathe, but I feel great now!
The best news is that Sonnie and I now know a sweet 5K route on campus and any one who wants to (I'm looking at you, Mary!) (though anyone and everyone is/are welcome!) can train without going in circles or jogging in place. We talked this morning about doing it every Saturday (that's what she said) but that might have been the runner's high talking. Ask me again tomorrow.
Anyway, yay for 5Ks! I don't think I would have made it this far without the encouragement and camaraderie of y'all. I'm looking forward to improving my time and my endurance and my distance and meeting each of you at the finish line. <3

... or bust
Yes, Sonnie convinced me to throw myself at the mercy of 5K's feet. Baring bad weather, we'll be at the starting line on campus at 8:00am. I'm pretty nervous - I haven't actually run over two consecutive miles yet and somehow, I doubt that the last four weeks of travel and road food have really helped prepare me for a race. I keep telling myself that this is just to see how far along I am, what I'm really capable of, and also that some people will be walking the race, so I will most likely not come in last AND if I need to walk a few yards here and there, no one is going to throw me out and call me a failure. Right? Right. (Gulp!)
So wish us luck! Hopefully we'll have some good news to report back to y'all tomorrow.

Crick in my step...
Tomorrow is 5K day and I'm hoping it doesn't rain in the a.m. I just got back from a run at the outdoor campus track. *Jeffy I'm going to talk about TMI stuff now so you can click out of here if you'd like.*
I'm amazed at how hard I had to struggle today on my run. I know all women are different when it comes to their cycles and I am one of the unfortunate ones. Most of my pain I would say is in my back and in my legs and both continued to stay tight for the majority of my run. Ugh. It's so frustrating! *Jeffy...that was all...I hope it didn't make you cringe*
I was just about half way through with my sixth lap around the concourse (minus the hills) when a friggin' moving van started to back up onto the track to get closer to the Athletic building. Arrrrgh!
So, I stopped running and figured the van would stop soon but no it keeps coming my way. The only thing at the moment to do was to turn around and head in the direction I just came from.
I was thinking okay no biggie. I'll just run the other way. I picked up my feet and started to pound pavement and then the legs cramped up. Damn. I should never have stopped running. *sigh*
Up until this point the whole time I was running my legs were killing me because they were so tight. By the time I rounded the corner and counted my sixth lap my legs were just starting to loosen up until I stopped because of the moving van. Once I tried to start running again all the previous pain came back plus one to grow on.
I really do believe I could have completed 8 laps today which would have put me about 3.1 miles. I might have completed it around 45-50 minutes but I would have still accomplished my goal. So, even though I didn't manage to do 8 today I still feel encouraged that I can finish out tomorrow's 5K. Lord help me and please Ibuprofen be bountiful.

Sunless in Eugene
Hi ya'll!
I'm still here and keepin' on keepin' on.
I haven't ran since Friday, but I have been to the gym two other times to lift weights and work out on the elliptical. I have no pants that fit me to prove that I have been sticking with it. I have yoga tonight and I'll get back on the treadmill tomorrow morning. I have this week off so there is no reason for me to waste this time. In-between job hunting and grad school application I will increase my running distance. Watch out treadmill ... here I come!
My friend is coming from Portland tomorrow and if it is nice we'll be hitting the mountain for a little hiking action. I may have to put off the treadmill one more day, but most likely it will be still be raining and I'll be running alone and bored. This whole working out alone thing sucks the big one!
Oh and if the sun doesn't come out and stay out soon, I may scream.

Track Tuesday
Hey where are y'all? It's like the Sonnie show around here these days.
I went to the track during my lunch hour today.
I went around the outdoor track (Homer Bryce Stadium)a total of eight times and ran five of them. I ran the two miles in about 23-24 minutes. I was going to run the 3 miles but decided not too because I'm still feeling a slight twinge in my knee after yesterday's one hour recumbent bike ride.
Hope all is well. The weather in Nac is gorgeous!

Oh Moanday...
Chrissy and I have decided to definitely sign up for the 5K that will be this Saturday on campus. I hope more peeps will join us.
Yesterday, during my lunch hour I took a horror novel with me to the Rec Center and stayed on a recumbent bicycle for 60 minutes. I rode a little over 11 miles.
It made my right knee feel a little off.
Last night I met Chrissy and Mary at the Rec Center and we jogged and walked on the track. Our jogging and walking consisted of running two laps and walking one. We kept that up for about 30 minutes.
Mary and I stayed a little longer and did lower body weight training.

I did it!
If I am using mapmyrun.com correctly then I accomplished running my 3.1 miles and just a bit more today. I ran the above route three times which came out to 3.25 miles.
I hit the pavement in my neighborhood and forced those miles out of myself. It took me 40 min 21 sec which is sloooooooow but ya know I'd rather worry about completing the 3 miles than worrying about how long it took me. I'll work on the time later when I can become consistent with pushing out a 3 mile run.
The weather today was warm which added a little difficulty to my run but man the little hills that I had to climb didn't seem like much in the beginning but after the second mile holy moly my calves were burning!
I'm so happy with myself today.
I hope everyone is enjoying this gorgeous weather of low 80s and sunshine. (sorry Kealy!!)

...
Last night I met the girls at the gym. All had been lax on the running gig so we all headed feet first into switching from walking a lap to running a lap.
Some of the laps that were ran were challenging sprints so we sweated quite a bit and I think we were all a bit exuberant about getting back into the groove again.

Tomorrow's Another Day
Well, after two weeks of getting thrown up on, sneezed on, coughed on, snot-wiped-on by my three sick mice (and my husband was out of town most of Spring Break), I am in big need of getting out to run again. It's been two weeks since I last did. The insoles that I bought help, but I need to get some better ones still. I only had enough on me to get the super cheap-o ones last time. I'm sure I'll have to start all over again by now!

Tuesday evening I met up with M at the Rec Center. Even though neither of us were very fond of the idea of running we actually pulled off two miles. Granted we had a lap or two of walking in between the two miles we still pounded them out. I'm glad we did it because I felt a bit more in the groove and in the end it felt good all around.
I think I'll be more focused once spring break is over. I'm starting to feel antsy and I know it'll be a relief to start running again.

walk it out
Yesterday I met Mary at the Rec Center and we sweated it out a bit at the track. We're both trying to get ourselves back into the game so we started out by walking a lap and jogging a lap for 30 minutes. I was energized afterwards and felt good to be back in the land of track dwellers again.
We'll be meeting up at the gym again tonight.
I've put on a couple of pounds while my parents were visiting from Ohio. Pants are feeling a bit tight and the extra weight is understandably making my knees very angry. That is not good, but I am getting back to it and happy to be sweating again.

Hello!
I'm still here and going strong (sort of). I finally was able to run a 12 minute mile. Freakin' A. Took me long enough. I feel like I was the only one who couldn't do it. haven't been able to do 3 miles without stopping and I'm a little worried that I won't be able to make it by April. I've only been able to run 2 miles once ... and very slowly.
Here's my game plan:
I have 6 more weeks before the big day. I can almost always run 1-1/2 miles. I just need to increase my running distance by 1/4 of a mile each week. No problem. Who knows, maybe by the time I get to the big day I'll be able to go further. I need to stop focusing on time and just focus on distance. Speed will have to wait for the next race.

Who knows, maybe by the time I get to the big day I'll be able to go further. I need to stop focusing on time and just focus on distance. Speed will have to wait for the next race.

Still kicking...just not running this week.
All is quiet on the exercise front for me this week. My parents are visiting from Ohio and I have been enjoying just hanging with them.
I have been walking when the weather allows and luckily my dad is keeping up with the pups and I on our one hour long walks around the neighborhood.
I hope everyone is recovering from injuries, the I don't wannas, and whatever else that presents itself as an obstacle to our 5K mission.

Week Off for the Weak-Off
Hello pals,
This past week for me was extra lame-o running wise. MRT thinks I have hit a wall and need to do more cross-training to breach it. We'll see. My ankle is not too bad now, but it's not like I've been working it too hard.
Tuesday, we mostly just walked while I spilled job-related rage and frustration to Sonnie and Chrissy at the rec center.
Thursday I skipped because I ended up going to a meeting for and joining the Stepford Wives of Nacogdoches, who are very nice people that make terrible tuna sandwiches. But I don't mind. The spirit of volunteering is alive with them, plus another friend is in it. It's the perkiness that is creepy.
Saturday, I was too tired for serious crafting, plus I was busy eating pancakes and you know how that is.
So Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! I finally decide: okay, lame-o, let's get our runnin' britches on. So I decided to shoot for 5.3 pace on the treadmill, which puts my pace just over the 11 minutes/mile that I knew I could do. Well, I made it just short of one mile before I got a crick (crik?) in my back and had to return to fast walking for a couple minutes. When I returned to "running," I lowered the pace to 4.9 and was able to, between the first jogging section and fast walking, complete two miles in a very lackluster 26 minutes. Overall, I walked/jogged 4 miles on the treadmill.
I am really not progressing right now. I am disappointed, but I'm not going to quit. Anyone have some good tips? Should I bring my pace back down and go on some more 20+ minute sprees? Should I try to pick up the pace and just run in shorter bursts?
This week I am going back to trying hard again. Pancakes be damned! Any input is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Lame-O

Knee-ding to Recoup
I didn't run at all this week to see if my knee would start to feel better. And it is finally improving. It feels like there's a bouncy ball behind my knee cap. I hope it does just mean my muscles are trying to build up and it will soon stop! I'm going to get some inserts for my shoes, too, and see if that helps. My shoes look fine still. ... The Tyler 10K is definitely out. I won't be ready in time. I'm such a maniac! I don't know why I was pushing myself so overly-hard. I'll happily do the 2 miler. We'll see how running on Tuesday goes.

Progress and Plans
Hello, all!
So my knee has still be bothering me, and instead of running I've been doing low-impact stuff, like yoga and biking and weights and walking. The knee region seem to be improving slowly but surely, and I guess I just have to keep being patient. It's frustrating, but as long as I'm still getting my sweat on, it's not so bad.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I am doing a lot of traveling for work in March and won't be in town very much. Next week, I'm going to a conference in Miami which will be pretty busy. Spring Break I'll be on a Llama Trek in New Mexico. And at the end of the month, I'm going to Galveston for four days. Whew! I'm going to bring my exercise band thing because Sonnie once pointed out to me that it's lightweight and easy to pack, and do what I can in my hotel rooms. Plus, hiking around with Llamas should be a good workout. And maybe by the time I'm back to regular training, my knee will be healed. Here's to hoping!
I'm so far planning on tackling the two mile run in Tyler at the end of March, so long as the knee can take it, and I want to do the Running of the Horns in April for sure. Good luck to everyone and happy running!

i'm gonna earl...
- Warmed up with a 20 minute game of racquetball. Is it still called racquetball when you play by yourself?
- Ran a mile at 10 min 46 sec even though every joint in my being was screaming bloody hell at me.
- Weight trained for about 25 minutes and felt pukey afterwards.
I feel fine now but overall it wasn't a great day at the gym for me.
Pass me the m&m's and lets call it a day.

Norma
I was taking a shower when Norma started talking to me about running. There is something very strange about trying to have a normal conversation while scrubbing your private parts, but if it didn't bother her why should it bother me? Anywho ... Norma is the 70 year-old runner who kicks my ass every morning. She only started running 6 months ago!
She told me that she started out by running a few minutes and before she knew it she was running a mile. Now she's up to 6 miles and she ran her first 5K last month. She recommended that I get myself an ipod. When I told her that I do have one, she told me about podrunner where I can download free music from a DJ! I checked it out. I don't like it, but I'm going to try it anyway. Who knows? Maybe a little techno and competition from a 70 year old is just what I need to be able to run more than 2 miles without stopping. Or maybe I need more smack talk from Jeff ... we'll see.
Happy running!

once you start.
After last years training I dropped down to 198. After a summer of sweat and blood and 8 min. miles I maintained my flatbelly svelteness until my birthday... something happened... I ate cake and BOOM the cromagnon fat storing primitive man in me bashed skinny Jeff on the head and that was IT. 3,254 mini halloween candies, 2 thanksgiving turkeys, 56 pumpkin pies, 583 christmas cookies, 8 christmas parties, #$%*& super bowl, and valentine day )crap); bang I weighed 229 this morning. I could eat 2 of you.
I say all this to let you guys know once you stop running your body gets angry and your metabolism goes nuts. This lifestyle of running is not for the half hearted.
I ran 2 miles this morning in 20 min. while singing purple rain at the top of my lungs... beat that kealy stink pants.

push it...push it real good...
When I was getting changed into my work out clothes this afternoon I had it in my mind that I would be doing an outdoor run. The weather is gorgeous and plus I need to start hitting the outside and getting used to adapting to weather and concrete again. I cannot forever stay in my bubble called the Rec Center.
After pulling on my shoes I started to think that I wanted to lift weights, as well. I mean a mile or two of running will not last the duration of my one hour lunch and I didn't feel like using the rest of the time by walking.
So, after debating back and forth with myself I headed for the Rec Center.
I ran two miles at 22 min 38 sec. After catching my breath and wiping the sweat from my eyes I decided to run again. I ran one mile at 11 min 7 sec.
I am spent y'all.
As I eat my Lean Cuisine Panini (damn these are good) my hands are shaking from the effort it is taking me to lift this slice of goodness to my lips. Did you take note of that? My hands are shaking, y'all. Thank goodness I didn't weight train after my run because if I cannot even lift a slice of panini to my mouth then damn!
I have a feeling I will be sleeping by 9 tonight. Ha!

Long time, no bloggy
Hello pals,
I thought I'd check in, since I have mostly just been a commenter.
I have to confess: I have slacked as of late, but for good reasons. 1)My ankle has been freaking killing me and 2) umm, that 31 minutes of glory I was so proud of was like a one-time fluke?
I got in a mile with Sonnie and Nathan on Saturday (I was finally feeling like I could stay and do a bit more with them, but I had to get ready for work. Grr.) On Sunday, I hit the treadmill and was able to maintain a jog for 20 minutes, but when Sonnie came over and we discussed my treadmill speed of 4.9, we discovered together that that was 12 minutes and something per mile, which means I was not really pushing myself to what I even *knew* I could fairly easily do. Oops.
But hey--20 minutes of lame-o jogging, plus about 20 minutes of very brisk walking while I watched these forensic scientists solve murders/ Charred fingertips: yeck!
And I sweated buckets, so I felt some satisfaction in that. Good job, me!
Hopefully, this lame-o will be prepared for the 2-mile Aazalea Trail in Tyler...while Michelle is running circles around me in the 10K. I'll only be embarrassed if she beats me to the finish line. Ha!
By the way, I am planning on running my 5k at the Running of the Horns in Austin. I need to get registered. Anyone else decide on their races yet?

blue ball
Sunday was supposed to be like my easy day at the gym. I had set up a time to meet up with a girlfriend to play racquetball. Two minutes into the game of chaosball I was sweating big time. After an hour of play (which went by really fast compared to tennis) I felt good and was a sweaty mess.
I said my goodbyes to my girlfriend and then scooted up next to M while she was on the treadmill. She too looked like she had sweated a puddle. We both agreed it was time to hit the hot tub and boy oh boy was that a treat. The day was almost just a tad too warm for hot tubbing but we suffered through the warm bubbly treat. We did take a dip into the pool to cool down only to find our way back to the hot tub.
By the time I changed into some street clothes to go home I felt so wonderfully relaxed.
Now this morning was another story as I rolled out of bed and onto my feet. Holy crap! My legs from my feet to my hips are so darn sore. I feel like I had done like step aerobics yesterday and all of this came from racquetball. I sure did underestimate the power of chasing around a little blue ball.

Confessions
I really have my sights set on the Tyler 10K. Anyone? Anyone? Why not? So what if I end up walking the last mile or two, right? I think. And how do you know when you're really ready anyway? I've worked up to doing pretty well at 3 miles, but I'm not very fast. Is the goal to be able to run the whole time without stopping or to blow through it and make everyone eat your dust?
My knee is really HURTING when I go out for a long one. I tried to reconstruct last Saturday's triumph and didn't do so great. I mapped out a 4.6 route again, but ended up on backwoods roads that were like the stadium hill and I couldn't make it to the tops without stopping, and then had big scary dogs (not chained) running up to me and snarling, so I had to stop and walk and keep my eyes averted from them but scanning the tree line to see which one I could climb if I was about to get attacked. So, it took me about an hour (too much walking) and my knee now looks like it has a bump on the outside of it. Did I injure it? What do I do now? I like all those links Sonnie put on. I really need to learn more about stretching and strengthening on non-running days. I wish I had a personal trainer!

Gimps R Us
I am proud to share that Mary had shaved off some more time from the one mile run. We completed our one mile this morning at 10 min 59 sec. Even with Mary's bum ankle and my old lady hip we kept truckin' on and made it to the finish line.
It seems that many of us have injuries and it's a bit reminiscent of some of our shared history with roller derby. Ha! It's funny, though, that most of us have gotten injured just from running. At least with roller derby we had impressive stories of body checks or smashing into walls and railings. Running will get a person into cardio shape but it will take its toll on the body. We need to keep vigilant about making sure to take care of our bodies since running is so jarring to the body. I found some handy links to look at.
A link for yoga poses before your run:

Here is a link to some yoga moves that are great to do after a run:
http://www.ehow.com/how_10380_yoga-cooldown-after.html
Running will tighten up the muscles in your legs and as we know yoga is a great tool to lengthen those muscles.
This is a good one for me since I usually experience hip pains:
http://www.statssheet.com/articles/article64094.html
The basic suggestion is ice therapy directly onto the hip and also massage.
And one more link...just a basic injury prevention link from Runner's World...I really like this site:

Girlsss...
Let me just start by saying (without my sarcastic or condescending tone) how very proud I am of all of you. I have read over a few of your posts and feel a slight surge in my estrogen levels, soon to be countered by giant flashes of testosterone (that's what happens when I run). As a couple of you know I am an avid runner and will happily give my 2 cents.
I would like to start with a few things that helped/help me.
1. good shoes: wear a potato sack and spend $$ on the shoes.
2. goals: I use the nike+, I can set goals, challenge friends, and keep up w/ miles ran while listening to my favorite hall and oats songs?
3. network of people: nothings better than taunting someone or cheering for someone or just a little healthy competition. (kealy is slow)

Huzzah!
Hey Ladies!
I went to the gym all by my lonesome yesterday, but I was determined to put on a good show, and I had the image of Michelle *accidentally* running over four and a half miles to inspire me. No excuses for this Wannabe 5K-er! I started my workout by hitting the weight machines again, but I was still sore from Tuesday so I used less weight and only worked my muscles for about 20 minutes. Then I warmed up by walking the track briskly for 10 minutes, and then I started running.
I didn't really pay attention to how fast I was going, but I knew I wanted to do two miles so I paid really close attention to my breathing and every time I felt a side stitch coming on I would slow it down and breathe deep. I almost gave up a few times, but I really wanted to be able to report good news on the blog this morning, so I pushed it. I practically sprinted my last lap and I finished out my two miles in... 20 minutes and 20 seconds! WOW! I was so happy I felt lightheaded. But then I realized I was lightheaded because I was about to pass out, so I did a good long cool down and then I was okay.
Afterwards, I met Nathan at the rock wall and he convinced me to climb two routes. I got to the top of the first one, but on the second route I only made it half way up the rock twice. Next time, I will climb first, and then run. Or just run and then nap.

I'm not ready
Why do I have such a hard time letting myself rest? My friend who I go to yoga with canceled (again). Pfunk and I decided to hit the machines instead. I teach the yoga class, so I would be the only person there. That's just plain silly. So ... I am physically hurt and I still tried to run on the treadmill today. WTF is wrong with me?! Now my leg is throbbing and wrapped in a heating pad.
That's it. I'm grounding myself! I am not allowed to go to the gym or mountain for two whole days. If I try to sneak out on myself, I'll give myself a good talkin' to and take away some of my privileges. I'll probably feel real guilty and apologize to myself later, but I have to be tough or I'll just take advantage of myself.

Staying on track...
30 min - elliptical trainer
10-11 min - one mile run
I felt great on the elliptical trainer today. My coworker and I were just chatting away and the time flew by. Well, really, we were venting to each about work related stuff and whenever we start to rant and rave about the office we always laugh at how much harder we tend to pick up our workout and sweat. It's definitely a great destresser.
I hit the indoor track and started to make my rounds for my one mile run. I was in great spirits but my body was hating life. My hips felt creaky and my legs kept trying to tighten up on me. Ugh. That is so annoying.
I hate feeling mentally amped only to find my traitorous body unwilling to play. I completed my one mile run. I didn't have my stop watch on today so I don't know the exact time it took me. I'm just glad I didn't stop after the fifth lap. I was so tempted but I sucked it up and kept going.
This upcoming week I start my cycle so I hope afterwards I will feel more inclined to routinely run two miles instead of just the one. But hey...every time I complete just the one mile I feel great even if my body says differently. Before the 8th of January I wasn't running a mile 2 to 3 times a week. So, I will not hold my head in shame and will continue to look straight ahead at the progress that I am making each day.

My First 5K!
We were in Dallas anyway last weekend, so I'd looked around for a 5K. I found one very close to our friends' house and started to get excited and nervous about it. The early registration was over, so I was going to have to pay on the day of... so since it was rained out, I'm kind of glad that I didn't preregister! I'm a cheapskate!
My friend described a route I could run on my own that would be about a 5K, but I misunderstood what "up the street" meant and I ran the other direction. I was supposed to turn around at Old Denton Rd. and head back, but I never got to it! My knees started getting tight so I walked about 20 yards to lengthen my stride and stretch them out, then got to the next street and turned back. I was going really slow and was getting soaked by every car speeding up to splash me (jerks!). When I got back I wasn't gone for the usual 35 minutes it takes me to do 3 miles, but, rather it had been 50 minutes! I was shocked. Am I really that slow? But, then, when I told them where I had run, they said I'd gone the other way and that was probably closer to 5 MILES! What?? So, we drove that route later on and it was 4.6 miles. Sheesh! My friend said that was the way to train for a marathon -- run 2-3 miles every day, then do a big run on the weekend. A marathon??? Me??? "Such as, and, the Iraq..."
Ouchie
I didn't go to the gym on Monday. The sun was out and I somehow talked two teenage girls into going for a hike. It took us about 1-1/2 hours. It was an incredible day. We could see all the way to a Three Sisters, which is about a 3 hour drive from Eugene!

The girls and I had a great time, but I slipped on the way down. The next morning I woke up with the most amazing pain in my calf. I went to the gym in the morning and could only warm-up on the elliptical. At work, squatting down to work with the kids made me wince.
The good news is that Phoenix is now inspired to train for soccer and wants to go run with me at the gym. I'm so excited to have a running partner. I wish that she wanted to go in the morning before school with me, but I'll take what I can get. We went last night and I was able to run for about 5 minutes before my calf started burning again. I switched to the elliptical. I have yoga tonight and tomorrow I'll jump back on the treadmill and see how I feel. Hopefully, we'll have some more beautiful days soon. There are so many mountains and buttes to tackle here!

Sore-a-saurus
Yesterday I was ambitious. Instead of simply meeting Mary and Sonnie at the rec center for our Tuesday night run, I decided to go to the gym an hour early and use the weight machines. I was nervous about going by myself, which is silly, but all the Frat boys, Sorority girls and strange machines can be intimidating. I ignored my fears of being made fun of and looking like a wimp, pushed on, and ended up doing a bunch of upper body exercises. Today, my shoulders and chest are killing me. I don't have the biggest chest, but every time I walk across the library I feel my boobs bouncing around boy, does it hurt. Sorry if that was too much information!
(Also, I have been using the website Kealy recommended, and it's really interesting to see how my diet aligns with their recommended servings. Like, even though I'm a vegetarian, I am always over on protein by about 10 grams and carbs by about 50. I'm not too concerned about this, since I'm not really trying to lose weight and instead want to build muscle, so extra protein is good. But I really don't see how I could cut my carb intake and still live a full and happy life. I don't think I want to live in a world where I can't have cereal for breakfast. Also, my calorie intake is pretty much right where it should be, so whatever.)
As for our run, it was okay - we didn't push ourselves too hard but we stuck to the track for just about an hour. I'm going to try to bust out another two mile run on Thursday night - wish me luck!

Hot in Here
Monday:
30 min - brisk walking
11 min 36 sec - one mile run
20 min - walking
Even though Mary and I beat our 12+ minute mile run together neither of us were really feeling the run. We were both feeling a lack of excitement as we completed each lap needed to get to one mile.
I guess we all have our "off" days and Mary and I just happened to share having the same "off" day. Luckily, though, we kept going regardless of the sweltering temperature of the gym. Damn, it was hot in the gym last night.

I'm Moving to the Rec Center
Yesterday Nathan and I went to the Rec Center and spent a solid five hours there. During that time, I:
Whee!
- Used the rock climbing wall and climbed two routes. I haven't climbed in at least a year and my forearms are killing me today.
- Used the rowing machine for five minutes (rowed half a mile!) and did some weight machines for my legs.
- Played two games of raquet ball, badly. It was my first time, and we were playing doubles with Amy and David, and I am not very good at games involving balls.
- I decided to see how fast I could run a mile. Nine minutes and 40 seconds! Wow! But, like I told Sonnie, I have to trade endurance for speed - there was no way I could have kept that pace up for more than a mile. I barely finished as it was and very nearly died after.
Whee!
Moanday
I cannot believe that it is already Monday.
Chrissy has already posted about our great workout on Saturday. I'm not wearing my watch with the stop watch on it so I cannot see what our exact time was in running two miles. It has been a long time since I had last run two miles straight and it had left me feeling exhilirated.
I cannot wait totrydo it again.

BAM!
This morning Sonnie and I met at the rec center. We started our routine by walking briskly for 30 minutes, and then we decided to see what we could do in the way of jogging. At the rec center, there is an indoor track on the second floor, and seven times around the track equals one mile. We were jogging and chatting away, and before I knew it, seven times around had already slipped by. So we decided to keep going... and going.. and going... and we ran TWO MILES! It took us just over 24 minutes, which is not bad, and I was feeling strong until the last three laps. Then, the only thing that made me push on was knowing how good it would feel to come to our blog and write about such an amazing feat!
I don't think I have ever run two miles nonstop like that in my life. In elementary school, I was in remedial gym. True story. At any rate, I feel great and happy and I can't wait to run again. But first, I have to finish my workout mixes...

Nada, zip, zero!
I'm so ashamed. I have not ran in almost a week!
Combination period and food poisoning. After going so strong for so long, I'm scared to go back. I have to go out of town today to visit my ex-boyfriend's mother (don't ask), so it'll have to wait until Monday. Luckily, I have Monday off! I'll have all day to warm-up and cool-down. I also got this really cool new mixed CD from Sonnie in the mail. I've already uploaded it to my ipod and can't wait to test it out. Thanks, Sonnie!

We are the Champions
Tuesday Afternoon:
30 min - elliptical trainer
30 min - walking
Tuesday Evening:
15 min - walking
10 min - jogging
10 min - walking
11 min1913 sec - 1 mile run
14 min - walking
10 min - stretching
Tuesday evening was a good run for me, Chrissy, and Mary. As a team Mary and I shaved off time from our one mile run from 12 min 32 sec to 11 min1913 sec. Chrissy ran her first mile with Mary and I and kept up wonderfully.
We continue to progress each and every time. I have the blisters to prove it. :)

I'm Back!
Hi Ladies and the Random Gent,
I know that I've been quiet on this blog, and I blamed it on my mysteriously injured knee, which made it painful to walk, never mind run. But as Sonnie pointed out to me, I am more than just my knee, and I could have been writing about the other fitness goals I've been working on. Like the fact that I can now do 15 real push ups in a row (I want to do 50), and all the stomach crunches I've been doing first thing in the morning, and yoga! Twice a week! (Well, usually.) At any rate, I seem to be back in the swing of things, with just a minor soreness in the knee area. So cheers to that!
Yesterday I went to the rec center with Mary and Sonnie, and we ran and walked on the upstairs track. After we warmed up, we jogged for ten minutes. Then we walked some more, and then we were going to jog another ten minutes, but we ended up pushing it to eleven and change because we were so close to doing a complete mile. And we did it! Which means I have officially run my first straight mile! True, I'm a bit behind the rest of y'all, but hey - I was excited! And out of breath. I need to work on breathing properly, and also slowing down. I start running faster and that means I'll start burning out sooner. Patience, Chrissy, patience.

Hard-Earned Blister
I had a particularly scream-worthy day at work today, so Matt and I decided to hit the rec center to help me expend a little of my rage in a healthy way.
So on tired legs and a sorta sore ankle, I walked ten minutes of increasing speeds up to 3.9 before taking it to a 4.8 and jogging for 25 minutes. Then I watched Wheel of Fortune and I have to ask: do people really have to buy that many vowels? These are not that hard of puzzles, people. Oh well--tonight's winner walked away with over $53K in cash and prizes, including a new Prius and a trip to Mexico. All I walked away with is a sore-er ankle and a lot less rage. But for tonight, that was enough.
P.S. About that blister...it's rapidly growing on my right foot. Oww. I hope it stops. I need this foot for stuff. But no matter what, I'm not stopping running. I'm just getting warmed up!

Burn Baby Burn
Saturday:
Met up with Mary at the Rec Center. We decided we would bust out a mile on the upper level indoor track to see where we were.
30 min - brisk walking
12 min 32 seconds - 1 mile jog
18 min - brisk walking
Sunday:
Day Off
Monday:
15 min - brisk walk
10 min 39 seconds - 1 mile jog
20 min - walk a lap/sprint a lap
5 min - stretch
After running the mile today I was absolutely depleted. I cannot say that I put my all into the first 3 or 4 laps but by the time I hit the 5th lap I picked up my speed considerably and was feeling the burn in the lungs. I also experienced a bit of foot pain since I was breaking in new shoes today.
I have a blister to show for my work out today and a great feeling of accomplishment. I think the 10 m 39 s mile is even better that my run time when I had done it for Kinesiology in my junior year where I had to pass the mile run for one of my activity classes.
When I first began my slow jog around I was thinking to myself, "I'm going to keep going after the seventh lap." I was thinking that I would go slow and be able to run more than a mile without stopping. I guess I was unaware that once the techno picked up on my mp3 player that my brain and body switched over to, "it's time to burn this track up and see what we can really do."

Record-Setting Sunday
I beat my old record today! I jogged a total of 31.5 minutes today, with 29.5 at a speed of 4.8 and challenging myself the last two minutes at 5.4. I feel great! I probably could have done more, but didn't want to go overboard. Sunday at noon must be the high time of my biorhythm! I also credit Sonnie for helping me figure out where the heck the headphone jack was for my individual tv. Hillary Clinton was inspiring me until CSPAN had technical difficulties and then I watched Along Came Polly on USA.
Time flies (and so do my feet!) when I'm having fun. :) Yay!
P.S. My overall distance with warm-up and lengthy cool-down was almost 4 miles, but my distance run (jogged at a very modest pace) was 2.2 miles! Woohoooo!

My fitness pal
I found this website the other day and thought that ya'll would like to check it out. You can enter your fitness activity for the day (as well as your food intake). It's free and a good way to keep track of your exercise. I wish that it had cool graphs, but I'd probably have to pay for those.
Side note ... has anyone received their Run Your Brains Out CD yet?

Just a Tip
Okay, this is just a tip about shoes in case you didn't know.
If any of you are jogging/walking in old worn out shoes then you are in the wrong. Your body will not be very happy with you.
For most people replacing their exercise shoes will take place every six months. For very light exercisers I think replacing your shoes 8 months to a year is probably okay. For the average exerciser six months is usually a good time to buy new shoes.
Now for the heavy exercisers probably every 4 to 5 months is a good time frame to follow.
It's hard to keep up with how long you've had your shoes and what I usually do is take a pen and write the month and year of when i bought my shoes somewhere on the sole on one of the sides of my shoes. I used to write it on the bottom and of course over time it would wear away.
So...puuuuh-leeeeeez! If you are wearing old beat up shoes that you've had for years do your body a favor and replace those sorry suckers for a new pair that have actual shock absorbers. :)

Thank you!
I wanted to thank everyone for letting me join in on this. I feel great! My body is changing and most days I am happier and I have more energy.
I also wanted to update on what I've been up to lately.
I'm starting 3 minutes of running followed by 1 minute of walking after my period comes and goes. I am achy, tired, and bitchy and don't feel like it right now. Instead, I have been walking at a fast pace (3.9) with an incline or using the elliptical. I feel like I'm going to explode, so I hope it comes soon. After chatting with Sonnie the other day, I realized that I was not using the elliptical to my full potential. I usually start out with a resistance of 7 and stay at about 4, alternating pedaling backwards and forwards. I was hardly breaking a sweat. This last week I switched it to a resistance of 8-9 and an incline of 10-15 while only pedaling backwards for warming up and cooling down. Now I am a sweaty mess. Sonnie helped me become a sweaty mess.
I'm also going to attempt one day next week to jog and hide the clock like Mary did. I doubt that I'll be able to do 18 1/5 freakin' minutes, but I'm going to try.
Ciao!

Period vs. Woman
Well this last week basically the summary of my exercise is like this:
Period-3 points
Sonnie-3 points
A tie.
Yes, I took three days off in a row! I'm okay with that, though, because sometimes you just have to listen to your body and lay off when it says to do so.
I got back on track on Saturday. Mary and Chrissy weren't able to meet me at the rec center on Saturday so I hit the ole' neighborhood with the pups. They were troopers and put in an hour with me. The pups slept well for the rest of the day and I felt good and back to normal.

Let the Road Be Your Treadmill
Groovy. I think that is my next t-shirt idea.
I'm up to running 2 miles now! This week I'll keep at it, then next week BAM! it up to 2.5 miles. This is getting a little crazy. But, it's all on flat easy Raguet, so any sort of hill is going to kick my butt. This evening, Neal and I took the kiddos to the pond to feed the ducks and then into the stadium. He suggested I give those hills a try. Yikes! I really should. I can't imagine the average 5K having no hills!
I've had the thoughts: "So, after the 5 K am I going to keep running?? I mean, I don't want to go back to mush, but could I really keep it going for ... years ... to come?"
That's when my husband smiled and said, "Of course, then do a 10K, then a half-marathon, then a marathon." Easy for him to say! He only walks to work every day! Ah!

My Amazing Weekend Victory
I started the weekend on the worst possible foot as far as training goes. I skipped Thursday to go grocery shopping for Matt's birthday party and then ate a bunch of not-exactly healthy foods Friday night. Then I skipped Saturday with Sonnie to serve/eat French toast with my remaining guests. French toast! It sure was delicious!
Frankly, after that kind of showing, I wasn't expecting a lot from my body today, but as I got on the treadmill at the rec center and punched in weight and age and all that and fiddled with the tv channels and non-matching sound stations, I did something that surprised myself.
I did a five minute warm-up walk. Then I jogged for three minutes (phew! one down). Then I walked for 90 seconds. Then I jogged FOR EIGHTEEN AND A HALF MINUTES. What?! What?! Yes, it's true. I was doing a 4.7 speed/1.5 inclination on the treadmill, so not superfast or superhard, but I made it for a full 18.5 minutes. I probably could have done a bit more, but that was the end of my thirty and I was sweating pretty hard, so I decided to do a much slower cool down.
My inspiration was when Sonnie told me I should just start going sometime and not look at the clock until I couldn't go anymore to see how far I'd gone. I didn't exactly do that this time, but I did make it to five as planned and since that felt pretty good, I went to 5.5. Then 6. Eventually I thought--well heck, I'm pretty close. Just go the whole time. I am so proud of my body! And I'm proud of me! And I am grateful for the infomercial that held my attention so I didn't focus so much on the time as I did the bizarre crescent-shaped meals I saw being prepared in the XPress Cook 101, or whatever it was called.
"Works just like a real oven!" Oh yeah? So does my oven.
Conclusion: I'm still on track, despite some tempting food and a somewhat lazy weekend. Yay!

Yay!

Bored!
I'm bored with the treadmill. I'm sick of staring out the window. The same red truck is there everyday. The trash truck comes on Wednesday. Unlike ya'll, I don't have friends here who do anything but drink beer. I was thinking this morning while I was running about how nice it would be to have friends to workout with and how I could mix things up when a thought came to me ...
...we should exchange addresses and mail each other mixed CDs with some music that we like to run to on it. You might be surprised what my favorite songs to run to are. If we each sent one out, we'd have 5 new CDs full of new music! Mixed CDs are still legal, right?
What do you think?

Hello my lovely and fit ladies!
Yes, I am still injured. My knee has been in a kind of achey limbo for about two weeks now. Just when I think it's feeling better, I go running and then it feels bad all over again. So I'm taking a full week off from running and doing anything high impact in hopes that it will finally heal itself. I'm also looking into buying stock in Ibuprofen and some kind of knee brace (a stylish one, of course). In the meantime, I have been doing stomach crunches and push-ups every morning (I can do 12 without stopping!), and I've been going to yoga 2 times a week, and I still ride my bike everywhere. I wish I knew what triggered my knee twinge, but it's a mystery. A frustrating mystery. I just want to run like the wind! Or at least like a slow moving breeze!
I'm glad to hear the rest of y'all have been running for five minutes without stopping. That's very impressive and I hope to be alongside you again soon. In the meantime, keep training and take care of your knees!

Good excuse this time
This week has been strange. Illness, snowstorms, babies. We didn't have school on Monday due to the snow, so I put in at least one good session that day. Tuesday I went in the morning, but my knee was hurting so I stuck to the eliptical and crunches. Last night I left for Portland and only slept a few hours.
Tomorrow is a new day! I'm going to the gym in the morning. I'm running for 3 minutes and walking for 2 minutes. I can and will do this. Watch out gym ... I just saw a baby being born and I think I can take on the world! I hope I never come down off this high.

Rawr!
I had met up with Mary last night at the campus' rec center. We were all like eye of the tiger and shit and totally kicked running's butt...
Jogged: 3 min
Walked: 90 seconds
Jogged: 5 min
Walked: 2 1/2 minutes
and we d0-si-do'ed and did it again a second time.

Pause
Friday is my day off from the gym, so I didn't go on Friday. Saturday I felt like do-do. My throat hurt and I was achy, so I skipped another day. I stayed home and drank a ton of emergen-C and woke up today feeling much better, but ... it the yard was covered with snow! I did drive to my friend's house to make snowpeople, but by the time I was done it was dark and I didn't feel safe driving in the freezing slush to the gym and back.
Excuses, excuses!
This is the first time that I've gone this long without working out since around the holidays. I'm hoping that we'll have no school tomorrow and I can make up for lost time.

Minor Setback, Small Victory
I went to the gym alone again tonight, pumped and ready for more of this week three exercise-fest. Go me for making it! But when I got there, I got tired fast. I wasn't able to do 90 seconds of jog/90 seconds of walking 3 minutes of jogging/3 minutes of walking. Instead, I stuck with 90 seconds jogging, 90 seconds walking. That might take me back to week 1.5, but I had to listen to my body's limits. I'm slightly bummed that with all my working out this weekend (Saturday and Sunday with Sonnie at the rec center, plus skating--also with Sonnie--on Saturday), that my performance was so lackluster. Nevertheless, I'm proud of me for making it out. So maybe my 9 weeks to 5k will be slightly longer, but I should still definitely be ready by late March.
Go team!

Hello muscles!
Wednesday:
Skiing Machine: 30 minutes
Core Exercises with medicine ball: 30 minutes
Thursday:
Elliptical Trainer: 30 minutes
Weight training upper body: 30 minutes
**Lately, I have been feeling pretty depleted by the end of the day or more like after my afternoon workout. I have been eating well and taking my multi-vitamins. I still need to get better about taking in more water and staying hydrated.
I think more so I'm feeling depleted because I am back to exercising 6 to 7 days out of the week. I think I'll need to look into protein shakes to make sure I have enough fuel to do the things that I want to do. But I'll hold off on that for now because just thinking about that makes me shudder. :)

ch-ch-changes
I'm up to a total of 30.13 miles of walking / running since I started keeping track.
I got off the program for the long weekend. I found that I was spending over an hour running, warming-up and stretching. I didn't have time to lift weights, do ab work, or sit in the steam room (my favorite). I missed those things. Each day this weekend I ran / walked 20 minutes to keep endurance and used the elliptical for 30 minutes and ended with weights, stretching and the steam room.
A group of friends and I have been going to yoga class at least twice a week, but a few weeks ago the yoga instructor on Thursday nights left to open a new studio. My schedule (as well as the other people's) is very tight. I asked them and the Y is letting me use the room. I have been leading my friends once a week. Last week I decided to use an old CD that Amy, Chrissy and some other Nac folks would practice to a couple of times a week. I forgot completely about yogic bicycle. Chrissy, do you remember that? 50 times!? I have incorporated that into my daily routine and it feels great (now ... it sure as hell didn't feel very good the first time).
I want to continue on this program and I think due to the time I have in the morning, I'm going to have to put the weights on hold during the weekday. For now I'll stick with the program, adding the yoga bicycle and continuing with the yoga at least 2 times a week. The weekends I can focus on my arms and the steam room.
Oh ... screw the scale. My pants are less tight so I must be doing something right.

Back on Track!
Hello Y'all!
So I had another exercise-hiccup last week and somehow managed to injure my knee. I woke up Sunday morning, the day after working it at the gym with Sonnie and Mary, and my knee felt a little funny. But I walked the dog anyway, and when I got back from that I could barely walk. Very frustrating, not to mention painful, and also confusing since I don't know what exactly triggered this injury. I skipped my workout date for Sunday and yesterday I went to yoga but took it easy, and today I feel just about 100% better. I guess my body just needed a break after finding itself so active after so many weeks of sitting on the couch!
I'm ready to get back to work, though, and by work I mean WORKING OUT! Starting Week 3 tonight with Sonnie and Mary and I think it's going to be a good one. Hope everyone has a healthy week as well!

Set Back: Vol II
Hi friends,
Hooray for everyone this week!
I have fallen a week behind. Boo. I've had a cold since Tuesday (the doctor suspects cedar fever) that has caused an icky sinus infection. Today I felt much better and ready to begin week 3...or is it 4? when Matt and I started arguing about attending church followed by who had cut the cheese. Not believing one another, we (Matt) climbed into the attic to discover the smell was instead TWO dead rats we set out to poison ten days ago. Everything was fine until the Lysol ignited wires the rats chewed causing a medium-sized insulation fire.
Several lessons to be learned. One--among many--is not to complain about having to attend the happy-clappy *contemporary* church service at 6:30 because you missed the traditional service this morning. Sack up and go. We missed church this morning because our super awesome washer & dryer was delivered. Amen! (Thanks, Turners! You are officially share holders) No more streams flowing through the hallway! No more 1.5 hours to dry a pair of jeans and a sock!
I plan to run tomorrow. And pray thanks.
Good luck this week, ladies! Pending respiratory health and avoiding the bubonic plague, I'll be on track to run with you in March/August.

Sore Legs, Happy Heart
Hey everyone,
I am so proud of you all! It is amazing to watch everyone's progress, even though we are working out and preparing in different ways and in different locations, too!
Last night, I was all set to just sit at home and do some laundry when Chrissy couldn't make it to the track. "It's darn cold," I reasoned. But then I thought: NO! You feel good, you have time, and boy are you in a bad mood about work! I knew it was time to blow some steam off. So I did my first solo 5k-prep workout. It wasn't much different from the ones I've done so far with Chrissy and Sonnie except I did it by myself! Oh, and I brought my iPod. The time actually went really fast alternating between walking and jogging. I even broke a sweat in the midst of the chilly weather. Alright!
Here's what I did:
-2 very brisk laps around the top of the track (concourse?) as warm-up
-25 minutes of the Week 2 plan (alternating 90 sec jogging/2 min running)
-1 full lap of the concourse jogging (rather slowly)
-2 cool down laps of very slow walking
-stretches
Also, a creepy dude watched me stretch from the parking lot and I kinda speeded those along. Hee hee.
Anyway, it is easy to have a set back, but you all are keeping me inspired and I do so appreciate it. We will definitely be ready for a late March/early April 5 K at this rate. I am so proud of everyone and also proud of me! Keep up the good work.
And also: tomorrow at 10am at the rec center at SFA if anyone is interest. Sonnie, Chrissy, and I are all going.

Friday's Fantastic Feats
Exercise:
Elliptical Trainer: 30 minutes
Walk/Jog: 30 minutes
**Went back to the gym when my boss let me off early today and did:
Treadmill: walked/jogged for 30 minutes
Weight Training: 30 minutes
I went to the gym today during my lunch hour with my co-worker. We got on the elliptical trainers and just chatted away. The time sped by and by the time we got off the machines we were both a sweating mess.
We stretched and left the gym and high-tailed it back to work.
The boss was nice enough to shut down the office today at 1:00. I'm still here but plan to leave around 3:00. I'm going to go back to the gym and get my run in since I haven't done my second walk/jog for the week.
I paid big money today to join the campus' new recreation center. I must admit I was suckered in because it is pretty nice in there.
I think Sunday I will go and check out that heated outdoor pool. Wheeee!

set backs
I have a confession to make. I've been lazy this week. Really lazy. I skipped yoga on Wednesday (thought to be fair I'm making it up today with the noon-time class) and I cancelled my running date with Mary last night (we rescheduled for Saturday morning, if any peeps are interested). It's been cold lately, and I'm falling into hibernation mode, and I was feeling bratty and under the weather. But reading through the reports here and seeing how everyone has been pressing on and kicking ass, well, I'm re-inspired to get with the program (and stick with it!).
5K, here I come!

Stupid scale.
I don't normally weigh myself. I don't like judging myself based on a number and it usually just makes me feel bad about myself, but I have been working out for a while and thought I would give it a go.
Well .... guess what?
After almost 2 months of working out at least 3 times a week (the last 3 weeks have been 5 times), I have gained weight. WTF is up with that? I know that it has nothing to do with numbers. I know that shouldn't matter one bit. The important thing is that I feel better and stronger. I have more energy. I'm happier ... er ... I was until I weighed myself. I'm never stepping on a scale again.

Thursday's Throw Down
Went to the campus recreation center and exercised with a co-worker.
Walked Briskly: 40 minutes
Walked & Jogged: 15 minutes
Cool Down: 5 minutes
I'm feeling great physically these days. Every day it seems that I have a new ache but it's the kind that's satisfying because I'm moving and using my body. One of the reasons that I like exercising is because I feel body capable which equals body confident.
Now I'm not saying that I'm a girl who's confident in how her body looks in a bathing suit. However, I am confident in how my body moves and what it is capable of doing. And even though I'm not pleased with how my body looks in a bathing suit I don't let that stop me from donning a swimsuit to get into a pool.
I hope everyone is getting to a point where they are proud of themselves and patting yourself on the back for a job well done. I'm proud of us wanna be 5K-ers.

Making Progress!
Three cheers for Sonnie's good advice about eating before jogging. I only go in the mornings so I often wouldn't eat beforehand because I was worried about getting a cramp. So, the last two times, I made sure I ate a couple handfuls of peanuts half an hour before going -- and I improved significantly!
Today I ran my whole 1.5 mile route! In the beginning I mapped out 1.5 miles and have been running more and more of it each day, until today (my fifth day out) I got through the whole thing! I really had to keep talking to myself to get all the way up Pine St. to my house. Man, that was the hardest part. It's a steep hill! I felt like I was going to die!
I plan on sticking to my 1.5 mile route through this week and next, to improve my time. Then the week after that, I'll add on a half mile. Then do that for three weeks, then add another half mile, etc., until I'm busting through 3.5 miles!
Do we have a particular 5K in mind? What's my deadline again?? I can't do Sundays, is there one on a Saturday?
