Confessions

I really have my sights set on the Tyler 10K. Anyone? Anyone? Why not? So what if I end up walking the last mile or two, right? I think. And how do you know when you're really ready anyway? I've worked up to doing pretty well at 3 miles, but I'm not very fast. Is the goal to be able to run the whole time without stopping or to blow through it and make everyone eat your dust?

My knee is really HURTING when I go out for a long one. I tried to reconstruct last Saturday's triumph and didn't do so great. I mapped out a 4.6 route again, but ended up on backwoods roads that were like the stadium hill and I couldn't make it to the tops without stopping, and then had big scary dogs (not chained) running up to me and snarling, so I had to stop and walk and keep my eyes averted from them but scanning the tree line to see which one I could climb if I was about to get attacked. So, it took me about an hour (too much walking) and my knee now looks like it has a bump on the outside of it. Did I injure it? What do I do now? I like all those links Sonnie put on. I really need to learn more about stretching and strengthening on non-running days. I wish I had a personal trainer!

Michelle, I know about taking the adventurous walk/run trail that sometimes put us in the path of strange dogs or the random stranger who wants to initiate conversation. If you are in an area where unleashed dogs are a common obstacle you can either stop taking that path or have a can of mace on you for unpredictable situations.

I found this link that had good instruction and explanations regarding injured or pained knees.

Now I don't recommend self diagnosing but it's a good link to be more aware of what could be going on with your knee.

I know from seeing a podiatrist what my problems are and it had to do with my feet not giving my body the stability it needed which affected my right knee and hip. My feet were molded to make inserts that I put into my running shoes. It keeps my feet from rolling inward called over-pronating. I think many people have a gait that needs to be corrected.

Some of you may have injuries due to over training.

In the end, though, if your "insert body part here" stays in pain for over a week it's probably time to see a doctor. In the meantime....Ice it! Rest it!

Man...I am so sorry if you are still reading this. Longest comment ever!:)

I'm hoping to be able to do a 10K by the beginning of April. My personal goal is just to be able to run a race without stopping. I'll work on the speed thing next time around.

I agree with Sonnie ... bring some mace with you next time.

I haven't had knee problems this time, but when I tried to start running other times in my life I did. I think the difference is that I'm training slowly, I have good shoes, and I'm remembering to warm-up and stretch. This is also the first time that I've ran on a treadmill. Pretty soft compared to cement.

I'm trying to outdo Sonnie's comment in length. I think she beat me.

Good comments! Thanks for the tips. I have not been warming up before running. I will do that after giving my knee a rest (I almost said "break" and I think that would be bad luck!). I probably have been pushing myself too quickly, too. I worry about getting bored and losing interest in running, so I keep giving myself a new goal. I'll just slow down and make new shorter routes -- that don't include big scary dogs.

Wow Michelle-- you are like an action hero! Not that I recommend you take any more paths with snarly dogs. That sounds completely terrifying.

In other news, I am planning on running in Tyler, but only the 2 mile. I am a lame-o, but a 10K is a ways off for me. I will proudly high five you though when you get back from your run and I am calmly drinking hot chocolate and lowering my heart rate. That is, if you don't beat me back...how embarrassing. :)

i wish i was ready for a 10k, but i'm still working on the 5er. i feel you on the knee pain - i don't have a bump, but my knee has been giving me problems on and off for too long now. sonnie's been telling me to go to a doctor, and i guess it's time to give in. my self diagnosis (and sonnie's link) says i probably have Iliotibial Band Syndrome, and the best cure for that is patience. bollocks!

Watch out it's not a meniscus problem. I had/have knee trouble and as I built up the more it hurt then suddenly it went away? The dr. I had been going to for it said I had built up my muscles and along the way dropped enough weight to make it a non issue? If it swells R.I.C.E. works every time with a chaser of anti-inflammatories.
