I ran outside on Sunday and did great. No pain ... no problem. I went last night to run again, but it was cold and raining so I went to the good ol' treadmill. That's when the pain set in. Shin splints. Ouch.
I was planning on running Monday, Wednesday and Friday (my run is on Sunday) and just doing some other cardio and/or yoga like normal on the other days, but I thought I was going to die! I finished my mile and switched to other machines for the remaining time. I think that I'm not going to run for the rest of the week. I know I'll be fine once I'm out there, but I did have one question ...
What kind of pain relief is alright take while running? I know that I can use some tiger balm, but is advil (or something else) safe to take before the run?

i bet sonnie can answer this question, so i'll leave it to her. but! i have the same problem with the treadmill. my body never feels quite right after running on it. i much prefer the track or the great outdoors. even though you won't be running too much leading up to your race, i am sure you'll do fine once you're out there. keep up with the yoga and stay limber! i'm so excited for you!
Even though it is recommended to not take any type of pain reliever before exercise I have taken ibuprofen before and had even done so on my 5K day. But I usually have continual pain in my hip because I'm OLD. :)
The only reason it is recommended to not take pain relievers before exercise is because pain can be an indicator sometimes that you should quit. Without those signals from your body then you could possibly injure yourself badly.
I don't know if you should stop running a week before your 5K. Normally, people continue their running regimen up until the deadline of their 5K and some even run a leisure 2 miles before their 5K to warm up. (that is crazy, no??)
But after having said that...you know your body better than anyone so you do what you feels best to you.
Also, after those bad running days with shin splints...don't forget to ice those puppies down! Ice, ice, baby!
I think those "people" are running for time and not just to see if they can run 3 miles straight. Crazies is what I like to call them (I'm just jealous).
My body felt great today and tried it outside. The weather took a nasty turn and isn't suppose to warm up any time soon. I already paid the registration fee, so there's no backing out now. I did 2 miles just now and it was okay. I did it, and I could have done more. Hurt or cold, I'll finish it on Sunday. I may not have the best time, but I'll finish the damn thing. ;-) I have ice on my legs as I'm typing. I also have yoga class tonight, which will be perfect for stretching out my various sorenesses.
